What’s the difference between RF & Skin Needling?

In the quest for better skin, microneedling has emerged as a go-to treatment, known for its ability to rejuvenate the skin and address a myriad of concerns, from acne scars to wrinkles - all by using the body’s natural ability to heal and repair.

However, within the realm of microneedling, two distinct techniques have garnered attention for their remarkable results: radiofrequency (RF) microneedling and traditional skin needling. Let's delve deeper into the world of microneedling to understand the key differences between these two transformative treatments.

The Basics of Microneedling

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves the use of a device equipped with fine needles that create micro-injuries in the skin. These controlled injuries stimulate the skin's natural healing process, triggering the production of collagen and elastin. As the skin repairs itself, it becomes firmer, smoother, and more radiant, with improvements in texture, tone, and the appearance of scars and wrinkles. This is the go-to treatment for improving most skin concerns and maintaining your results over time.

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling takes traditional microneedling to the next level by combining it with radiofrequency energy. In RF microneedling, the device not only creates micro-injuries but also delivers radiofrequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin. This energy heats the skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening the skin for a more youthful appearance. We can also use smaller amounts of heat to destroy damaged cells linked to rosacea, redness and melasma and promote healthy cell growth within the skin. We use a device called Sylfirm X, which is a Korean device and already making waves in the US!

The Benefits of RF Microneedling:

  1. Skin Tightening: RF energy helps to tighten loose or sagging skin, making it an ideal treatment for areas prone to laxity, such as the face, neck, and décolletage.
  2. Collagen Stimulation: The combination of microneedling and RF energy stimulates collagen and elastin production, leading to firmer, smoother skin with improved texture and tone.
  3. Scar Reduction: RF microneedling can effectively reduce the appearance of scars, including acne scars, by promoting collagen remodeling and skin regeneration.
  4. Wrinkle Reduction: By stimulating collagen production, RF microneedling can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helping to restore a more youthful appearance.
  5. Difficult to Treat Concerns: Using less heat with a device such as Sylfirm X, we can regulate the gland responsible for sebum production and reduce acne. We can also eliminate damaged cells responsible for melasma and rosacea.
  6. Minimal Downtime: While some redness and swelling may occur after treatment, downtime is typically minimal, allowing patients to resume their daily activities shortly after treatment.
  7. All in one device: This miracle device uses gold plated needles for precision and comfort, and can target concerns 0.3mm to 3mm deep (it can even treat the eyelids!)

Skin Needling: The Time-Tested Approach

Skin needling, or traditional microneedling, remains a popular choice for those seeking to improve their skin's appearance without the use of heat or radiofrequency energy. This technique is effective for:

- Improving skin texture and tone

- Minimizing the appearance of scars, including acne scars

- Reducing fine lines and wrinkles

- Enhancing overall skin quality

Key Differences Between RF Microneedling and Skin Needling:

  1. Technology: The primary difference between the two techniques lies in the technology used. RF microneedling incorporates radiofrequency energy, while skin needling does not.

  1. Results:  While both treatments can deliver impressive results, RF microneedling may provide more drastic results, particularly in skin tightening and collagen stimulation (hello snatched jawline), due to the added radiofrequency energy.

  1. Downtime: This really varies person to person. Traditional skin needling will leave the skin red immediately post treatment and you will encounter 5 days of dryness. However RF microneedling usually leaves the skin looking flush and glassy with its immediate cinderella effect (lifts and tightens). But overall both treatments have very minimal downtime of about 1-2 days.

  1. Number of Sessions: The number of sessions required may vary depending on the individual's skin concerns and treatment goals. Generally, a series of treatments (around 6 treatments) is recommended for both RF microneedling and skin needling to achieve optimal results. Committing to a complete skin journey is crucial when investing in either treatment. Pairing it with a cosmeceutical homecare routine is essential. It's like going to the gym but then eating junk food for dinner - what's the point?

Choosing the right treatment for you!

The choice between RF microneedling and skin needling depends on your specific skin concerns and desired outcomes. Consulting with one of our senior dermal therapists can help you determine which treatment is best suited to your needs. Whether you opt for the skin-tightening effects of RF microneedling or the time-tested benefits of traditional skin needling, both techniques can help you unveil smoother, firmer, and more radiant skin.
