RF Needling is highly customisable and safe across most skin types, but like any advanced treatment, it’s important to understand how to handle edge cases, reactions, or contraindications. Here’s what you need to know.
I have melasma — is RF safe?
Yes — in fact, Sylfirm X is one of the only RF microneedling devices clinically shown to treat melasma safely. We use a pulsed RF mode at shallow depth (0.3–0.5mm) to break down abnormal vessels and pigment without triggering inflammation.
RF is preferred over laser for melasma, which can worsen with heat or light.
Can RF cause pigmentation or make my skin darker?
When performed correctly, RF is safe for all Fitzpatrick types and does not trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation the way some lasers or peels can. We customise depth, energy, and pulse mode for your skin, and prescribe pigment-safe aftercare (including SPF and antioxidants) to minimise risk.
I’m prone to cold sores — is this treatment okay?
Yes — but if you’ve ever had a cold sore, take a preventative antiviral medication (like acyclovir) starting the day before treatment. RF can trigger outbreaks in sensitive clients, especially around the mouth or jawline.
I have rosacea — can I still have RF?
Yes — pulsed RF mode is specifically used to target rosacea, redness, and visible capillaries. We treat these at a very shallow depth to avoid flare-ups and strengthen the vascular network under the skin. Clients with active inflammation may also benefit from alternating RF with calming LED or Herbal B Peel.
What if I’ve had cosmetic injectables?
You’ll need to wait:
- 2 weeks after anti-wrinkle injections
- 4 weeks after dermal filler
Treating too soon after injectables may cause migration or interfere with results. Let us know your injectable history so we can schedule safely.
Can I have RF if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — due to the use of electrical energy and active post-care products, RF is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Safer alternatives like Herbal B Peel or LED facials can maintain your skin until you're ready to resume more active treatments.
I’m on Roaccutane — can I have RF?
No. You must be off Roaccutane or similar medications for at least 4 weeks before beginning RF microneedling, due to increased skin fragility and impaired healing.
My results feel slow — is that normal?
Yes — collagen remodelling takes time. Results typically peak at 6–12 weeks post-treatment, and earlier sessions are often building the foundation for long-term change. Stick to your course and use prescribed homecare — especially SPF, pigment inhibitors, and collagen-boosting actives — to support your results.
